Breakfast with A Heron, Mansfield Press

Another Dysfunctional Cancer Poem Anthology edited by Priscila Uppal and Meaghan Strimas

As a thank you to the small presses, magazines and artists that supported this year’s Crowd Funding Campaign by donating publications and merchandise, I’ve given them the opportunity to be on the show to talk about their presses and projects. This will be an occasional series with no prepared questions ahead of time. The first guest is James Hawes of Turret House Press. I speak to James about his own writing, starting a small press during a pandemic, the THP subscription service and more. I hope to chat with more presses throughout the year. He compliments the theme song and I compliment Jennifer Pederson, who helped with the song!

James also speaks about the magazine, the Frog Pond Review. He speaks about forthcoming chapbooks, including a manuscript by James’ late uncle Christopher Hawes and a follow up to Artie Gold and George Bowering’s chapbook with Apt. 9 Press. He’s doing 12 chapbooks a year with 4 mailings, one a season.

We discuss chapbook design and the joys of In Design. James talks about choosing to offer a subscription service, and the influence of rob mclennan. Turret House focuses on Canadian writers. We discuss the launches which primarily take place via the Accent Reading Series in Montreal.

James talks about his first experience at the ottawa small press book fair. I talk about other small press fairs, such as Expozine in Montreal.

James tells us about Turret House Films and new projects with Stuart Ross and others.

Thanks to Charles Earl for processing the episode, to Jennifer Pederson for the intro and outro, to James for being on the show and to all of you for listening and sharing this and other episodes. Stay tuned for future episodes!
